When it’s cold, your body burns lots of calories trying to keep warm. So your daily intake on an adventure like Fjällräven Polar will be between 3,500 and 6,000 calories. We’ll provide you with food for your journey, but a little tip is to add your own spices.
You could even bring Parmesan cheese to add flavour or peanut butter or Nutella to add extra calories – they taste good too. Don’t take out food from your backpack just to save weight. You’ll regret it. And don’t start a beach-ready diet anytime before Polar. You’ll appreciate that little extra when it’s -10°C.
What you drink is just as important as what you eat. And your body needs lots of water when you’re active, even in winter. We recommend drinking four to five litres of liquids per day, preferably in small amounts of around 150-200ml every 20 minutes or so. You can add a little extra water to your meals too.
And make time for warm, sweetened drinks. They don’t just warm you up. The sweetener helps your body absorb liquid and supplies your brain with blood sugar.
Avoid quenching your thirst by eating snow though. This just cools you down.
